Say Less - Move! AGB Coaching Ethos
Hey ya'll!
Thanks to you, we're growing, and as we expand, we promise to only bring in leaders who match our kind, demanding, and caring energy.
This week I met someone who's a great fit for our coaching mentorship (some of you saw him at the park Thursday, a future UH grad in the sports medicine program). I also met someone who's not a great fit for AGB. So here's what it takes to lead here.
We give girls direction, and we give THEM the power. Girls can't lead if coaches beat them down, BORE them, or exhaust them. So you must be fun. That's step one : )
We coach on the move. You may see some chaos. That's by design! We get girls moving before they fully understand the drill, and they coach up their friends, which keeps them accountable to each other. The pace makes them "catch up," and that's on purpose. Basketball is a game of split-second decisions, so we bake that into an uptempo practice and fuel it with FUN ENERGY and cheering. By the end of the season, the girls stop doubting themselves and just GO FOR IT!
We build confidence week by week. It's hard to see yourself as a leader if you don't feel like one. We move fast enough that they have to focus, but it's ALWAYS FUN, so they make their own giggle fuel without losing track.
Every practice, you'll see:
The same warm-up, so they improve one skill every session
A fun team-building drill that still builds skill
A new play each week
A huddle on our leadership skill of the week, then a cheer to break
We MOVE, YA'LL! No standing around while a coach explains a drill. The girls run it, we coach them through it, then we pick up the pace. This repeatable format means your girls WILL see growth in skills, focus, and confidence over our 10-week season.
Why it matters: Research from the Women's Sports Foundation and the Aspen Institute's Project Play finds that girls drop out of sport at higher rates than boys through the teen years, often because of a lack of fun, negative coaching, and not feeling included. We're here to raise athletes who fall in love with the game, themselves, and their abilities, and carry that into their futures as athletes, students, and professionals.
One caveat: No punishment running and a her-first approach doesn't mean we don't demand greatness. Encouragement-first doesn't mean no standards. The most effective coaching pairs warmth with high expectations and clear corrective instruction. That's my promise as a coach and this league's promise.
Know a college student who wants to learn these skills in a structured mentorship? Send them our way! We're enrolling coaching mentors now. They can apply https://forms.gle/ojHbgMrsuY7qrnmt6 with their resume and email us with questions.
See you on the court, ya'll!!
Love,
Coach Cora
